Over 100,000 Bulbs Lights Up the Country’s Most Energy Efficient Christmas Tree

As a season that’s overflowing with pyrotechnics, over-the-top lighting, moving displays and decorations, and power-consuming celebrations, Christmas has got to be one of the biggest carbon-emitting holidays of the year. But it’s so easy to get caught up in the spirit of the season that very few start considering its implications on the environment.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that the world needs to cut its carbon emissions. But how exactly can you keep carbon emissions at a minimum without having to sacrifice the festive spirit of the season?

This is what Firefly Electric and Lighting Corporation (FELCO) seeks to do. As part of the holiday festivities, Firefly Lighting lighted up its energy efficient Christmas tree for the fourth year at By the Bay, SM Mall of Asia with the aim to remind the public that celebrating the holidays can be done with greener, more sustainable lighting technologies.

The Most Energy-Efficient Christmas Tree in the Philippines

Dubbed as the most energy efficient Christmas tree in the Philippines, it was illuminated with more than 100,000 Firefly LED bulbs with the total energy consumption equivalent to two small window-type air-conditioners at two horse powers each. Shared Jhie Greenwood, FELCO Marketing Manager, “Firefly’s LED Christmas tree uses the latest lighting technology which is 5 times more energy efficient compared to the regular incandescent bulb."

"A Firefly LED light bulb consumes around 24 pesos a month – an amount that’s 7 times less than what’s consumed by an incandescent bulb,” said Jhie. She added that LED can save up to Php150 per bulb a month.

Aside from LED being energy efficient, it is also suitable for “green” building projects because it contains no mercury components and is proven to withstand impact, vibrations and disruptions. Furthermore, Firefly LED has a longer lifetime of 30,000 hours (equivalent to 6.8 years of continuous use) compared to the 1,000 hours of the regular incandescent bulb.

At the Winter Wonderland: A Tree Lighting Concert, guests enjoyed attractions such as the Inflatable Basketball, Balloon Darts, Snow Cones, Snow Blizzard Chamber, and the Snow Photo Booth. A Yuletide concert featuring The CompanY, the country’s renowned vocal ensemble; The Whiplash, one of the most sought after dance groups in Philippine entertainment today; and young theatre artist, Angia Lauren of Trumpets also performed live before the Christmas tree lighting.

Virlanie gears up for this year's Children's Month

Manila -- Virlanie Foundation, a Filipino non-government organization reaching out to street children, joins the Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) and rest of the country in celebrating Children's Month through various activities lined up this October. In coordination with the CWC, this year's theme is "Para sa Bright Child, Palakasin, Pagtulungan Natin".

The Philippines has been celebrating Children's Month every October for the past 19 years initiated by President Fidel Ramos when he signed Presidential Proclamation No. 267 during his Presidency. Incidentally, Virlanie Foundation also celebrated its 19^th anniversary this year. Virlanie Foundation, with the intent of giving opportunities and a normal and healthy environment for street children who have been rescued, organizes activities for this year's Children's Month focusing on Health and Nutrition, Sports, Creativity and Education.

Every child's well-being starts with a healthy meal!

To share the opportunity to help street children to Virlanie friends and supporters, Virlanie enjoins the public to pledge rice donations to Virlanie through a rice campaign. Christened the Rice Up for Street Children campaign, Virlanie aims to collect enough pledges to accommodate its monthly needs of 50 sacks of rice per month for its homes and outreach programs in slum communities.

Rice is an important part of any Filipino child's diet. Not only is it the only carbohydrate that contains the essential amino acids needed for a developing child, it's a cultural staple for any Filipino family. Rice Up for Street Children will be launched on October 10 with Tim Yap taking the lead in the activity as Virlanie's new Ambassador of Goodwill.

"Mens sana in corpore sano": A sound mind in a sound body

The Roman poet, Juvenal, couldn't have answered better when asked the question what men and women should desire in life -- "mens sana in corpore sano", translated to "a sound mind in a sound body". Virlanie Foundation aims to teach its children the importance of sports as it encourages the healthy development of their physical well-being as well as the values of sportsmanship and camaraderie experienced from a good game of football.

On October 22, 2011, the Azkals-Global Football Academy is hosting an afternoon of friendly football games for children at the Corinthian Gardens in Quezon City. Virlanie's Football Club (FC) will be competing against the football clubs from Azkals Global Football Academy, the Futkaleros of Tondo, Payatas, Corinthian Gardens, and Rizal. Virlanie Foundation invites friends and families to cheer on their favorite children's teams, the event will be at 12:30 to 4:00PM.

Street children to show their creative talents in the arts

The last of the trilogy of events this October will be an art contest at the De La Salle University's Collegeof St. Benilde. 15 Non-government organizations, including Virlanie, will be hosted by the Committee on Children in Poverty in Urban Areas of the National Council of Social Development (NCSD) as the latter organizes a day of artistic contests to foster children's creativity. The event will be on October 29, 2011 from 8:00AM to 5:00PM.

Virlanie Foundation is a child-caring institution empowering children for a brighter future. It takes care and looks after children in need of special protection. Its goal is to extend development services to children allowing them to become self-reliant, productive, and independent individuals using a family atmosphere and reintegrating them into normal community life.

The second leg of Tunog Natin concert series

After the success of the first Tunog Natin free concert last June held at the Ayala Triangle, here comes another set of OPM artists fighting for the hearts and minds of Filipinos this time at the grounds of Avida Towers Centera.

Spearheaded by Myrus each leg of "Tunog Natin!" offers something different throughout the concert series.

Since this project was launched there were a lot of artists who approached him asking to perform in his event but due to the limited time and place only ten artists were allowed to perform each leg, with 3 songs maximum for each artist. And also for security reasons.

Its powerful line up is being presented by Avida Land Corp., the concert showcases the best of Filipino music through the years. It coincides with the launch date of the second tower of Avida.

"Each leg aims the experience and richness of OPM. Tonight's concert features the varied and exciting genres and artists within OPM. The artists in this second leg are top notch. Whether they are younger acts or veteran performers, they are simply the best" says Myrus.

The event was open to public and property buyers. It was a very good idea to set up an event like this. Aside from the chance to learn what Avida offers it also gives a different kind of entertainment. Above all, it's a gathering of artists who supports and promotes OPM.

More than anything else this concert series aims to support the local music scene to encourage Filipinos to listen more OPM than foreign music.

It is also considered a collaboration of artists wherein artists coming from different genres gather to perform.

Goodyear Honors Five Highway Heroes from Nationwide Search

Goodyear recognizes motorists who went out of their way to help others through its 2010-2011 Bayani ng Kalsada awards, now on its 5th year

Goodyear Philippines honored motorists, who are exceptional for having demonstrated heroism on the road that benefited strangers, last July 15, 2011 in a formal ceremony at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel.

Bayani ng Kalsada is Goodyear’s annual nationwide search for Filipino drivers who demonstrate courage, sacrifice and concern for others through selfless heroic acts. Bayani ng Kalsada, on its fifth year, continues to highlight everyday highway heroes to promote safety on the road.

“Goodyear’s commitment to road safety goes beyond driving practices. We believe that selfless, heroic acts that save people’s lives and inspire others to do the same should not go unnoticed. This is why we are honoring today’s highway heroes, whose courage and strength have made our roads a better and safer place,” said Goodyear Philippines Managing Director Gerry Alava.

Everyday Motorists Turned Highway Heroes
The 2010-2011 Bayani Ng Kalsada winners feature brave and selfless public transportation drivers whose service-oriented ways went over and beyond safely getting passengers to their destinations.

Jeepney driver Richard Valerio Paragas from Caloocan City witnessed a truck crash into an L300 van. He stopped his vehicle and asked his passengers to transfer to another jeep so he could rush three victims to the hospital. One survived, owing his life to Richard’s quick response.

Tricycle driver David Domer Montenegro from Cavite City spotted an unconscious man inside a jeepney. Without thinking twice, he carried that man into his tricycle and brought them to the nearest hospital. When the man’s relative thanked David for his life-saving act, he said in the vernacular, “Helping others is its own reward.”

Taxi driver Herdy Bucayan Bandillon from Iloilo City heard through their radio operator that a fellow taxi driver was robbed at knifepoint in a nearby subdivision. Herdy immediately drove to the location and found the victim gasping for breath from several stab wounds. The subdivision residents were too scared to help him but Herdy immediately drove him to the hospital. Sadly, the man did not survive. Herdy was touched by the incident enough to even donate cash during the wake to help the victim’s family.

Taxi driver Esmeraldo A. Magandam from Davao City helped a 19-year-old girl desperately needing a ride for her aunt who suffered a stroke. He accompanied the pair to a hospital and did not leave until the patient received medical attention.

Jeepney driver Romualdo Sta. Ana Ariestotle from Cavite City rushed to where he heard gun shots and found bystanders too afraid to help. Searching for anyone wounded, he found a mother and a child and immediately brought them to the nearest hospital. Regrettably, the child did not survive. He later learned that the mother fell into a coma.

“These five motorists are examples of selfless heroism, and Goodyear is proud to have told their stories,” said Goodyear Philippines Managing Director Gerry Alava. “What we look for are not good deeds of superhero proportions but everyday circumstances where a driver stepped beyond his comfort zone — maybe even putting himself in harm’s way — to respond to the demands of a situation requiring his assistance with hardly any fanfare or drumbeat. To some, this is instinctive. To others, it is a choice. But certainly, for the five winners here today, it is cause for celebration.”

Bayani ng Kalsada 2010-2011 Winners
Bayani ng Kalsada 2010-2011 honors four regional winners and one overall winner. Regional winners Esmeraldo A. Magandam, Herdy Bucayan Bandillon, David Domer Montenegro and Richard Valerio Paragas will each receive a cash prize of Php 30,000. While overall winner, Romualdo Sta. Ana Ariestotle, will receive Php 50,000.

Bayani ng Kalsada is the Philippine version of a successful, long-running Goodyear program held annually in the U.S. and Canada (since 1983) that is now also held annually in Asia Pacific countries such as Australia, Vietnam, New Zealand and Indonesia. Dubbed Highway Heroes, the program has recognized truck drivers who have done heroic acts of courage, sacrifice and service on the road over the last 21 years. GMA Kapuso Foundation's Celebrity Ukay-Ukay at eBay

Starting July 15, GMA Kapuso Foundation's "Ogie and Regine Celebrity Ukay-Ukay" will have its items for online auction at www.ebay.ph/ukayukay until July 25.

"We wanted to sell fast that's why we partnered with ebay" says Mel Tiangco, Executive VP of GMA Kapuso Foundation. "We wanted to reach the younger sect and ebay gave us a very good deal, they are also helping us in this project" she adds.

"Masaya kami sa naging response ng mga tao, hindi namin akalain ng dudumugin talaga yung event last summer" says Henry Perez, Executive Director of GMA Kapuso Foundation.

What are the efforts of Kapuso Foundation?

It has been worthy supporting these activities because this project aims to foster integral education by providing students of under served public schools, both primary and secondary, a decent and functional classrooms which are conducive for learning, water distribution and sanitation facilities and environmental awareness through tree-planting around the school building.

Since 2003, The Kapuso School Development project has constructed or repaired 250 classrooms in the poorest and remotest communities across the country. Ford Philippines kicks-off 2011 Driving Skills for Life Campaign

Company is aiming to have 2,000 more licensed drivers participate this year

MANILA, Philippines, 8 July, 2011 – Ford Group Philippines (FGP) kicks off its comprehensive and UN-recognized road safety initiatives under the company’s global Driving Skills for Life (DSFL) campaign this month. This program is part of Ford’s ongoing commitment to promote and improve driver safety in the Philippines.

Ford is planning a series of day camps and seminars throughout the year and aims to have 2,000 licensed drivers participate in the DSFL program. Training will focus on safe, smart and fuel efficient driving skills as well as providing handy tips on vehicle maintenance.

Driving Skills for Life offers free courses, both classroom training and practical learning, to help educate drivers of all ages on safe driving practices. The program has been customized for the Philippines to reflect the local driving environment and road conditions. Since 2005, Ford’s DSFL program has had more than 20,000 participants.

The Driving Skills for Life program also includes seminars for Ford employees, licensed student drivers, customers, corporate fleet accounts and automotive enthusiast such as car clubs.

“Our commitment to our customers does not end with our products. We are also dedicated to encouraging people to become responsible and safe drivers. Since road safety is an important issue and concern in the Philippines, we aim to minimize road traffic accidents and promote economical and fuel-efficient driving through the Driver Skills for Life education campaign,” said Anika Salceda-Wycoco, FGP’s AVP for Communications.

This year’s first DSFL seminar was held recently with customers at Ford EDSA dealership. A total of 21 Ford owners and 9 dealership employees participated in the session that was conducted in collaboration with Ford’s DSFL partner, Tuason Racing School (TRS), and featured interactive activities on safe, smart and fuel efficient driving techniques. Participants were also given the opportunity to drive and apply their classroom learning’s.

“There are different causes of motoring accidents every year. Speeding, drunk driving and not following road signs and regulations are just some of them. We need to understand that road safety is a full time commitment and licensed drivers should always keep an open eye and undistracted mind when on the road,” advises JP Tuason of TRS.

Customers who participated in the Driving Skills for Life seminar were not only pleased with vehicles they test drove, but also with Ford’s admirable initiative.

“As part of my family’s business I transport heavy appliances such as refrigerators and air conditioners using my Ford Ranger, my truck has been with me for over a year now and it hasn’t failed me once. After learning so much from the seminar, I feel confident again knowing that I am well-equipped with road safety knowledge which can help me avoid traffic violations as well as road accidents,” explains Ryan Vincent Mitra.

“I really learned a lot from this session. I’m glad that I had the chance to practice my newly-learned skills and apply it to real driving situations. This will help me prepare for or prevent possible dangers on the road,” adds Fiesta-owner Jocephine Yao.

“The Driving Skills for Life program is an ideal way for Ford to leverage our global expertise to help make a difference here in the Philippines. We hope to encourage more Filipinos to practice safe driving every time they are on the road,” Wycoco added.

Ryan Cayabyab uplifting the Filipino Music

7101 Music Nation spearheaded by Maestro Ryan Cayabyab launches the much awaited and highly anticipated “2nd ELEMENTS National Singing and Songwriting Camp".

Together with great filipino musicians Mr. C builds this platform as it will gather Filipino artists and musicians and promote the sharing of ideas and talents to further uplift Filipino musicality and artistry.

After the success of of the camp for songwriters last year, a new track has been added this time to include singers. The camp is open to all aspiring singers ages 18 to 25 and all aspiring songwriters ages 18 to 35 who are citizens and residents of the Philippines.

There is a limited number of slots for each track and a select group of established and highly respected singers and songwriters shall screen and audition the participants for the singing and songwriting slots. A total of 30 singers and 30 songwriters will be chosen to join this year’s Camp which takes place in Dumaguete, Negros Oriental from Nov 6 to 10.

Cheryl Cosim, Plan International's Ambassador for Child's Health and Rights

"It is the right of every parent to give their children a good health and education" notes TV 5 Anchor Cheryl Cosim, during my interview with her at the presscon of Superbug a few days ago.

Early this year, Plan International, a children's organization working with communities in 48 developing countries to alleviate child poverty has chosen TV5’s Cheryl Cosim as their Ambassador for Plan’s Health and Child Protection programs. Cheryl and Boy Abunda were both chosen to be their ambassador.

Plan works with more than 37,930 communities each year, covering a population of 28,000,000 children.

In the Philippines

Plan Philippines International has been here for 50 years, it’s a non government organization that is child centered and has just celebrated it's 50th year.

The Program

The program on Health, called Batang Lusog (Healthy Child) addresses rights violations in health, water and environmental sanitation.

"We are child centered and we take care a whole community. Tinitingnan namin yung pinakamahirap na probinsya dito sa Pilipinas. We are present in 7 provinces. Kamakailan we have ended our mission sa Camotes Island. Inalagaan namin ang community in terms of health, education and we held disaster risk prevention programs.

We don’t just stay and check what program we can introduce. Before we leave the place we make sure na empowered na yung mga tao doon at alam namin na maipagpapatuloy nila ang aming programa long term." Cheryl shares.

"It won't be effective if we just introduce it them, kailangan maintindihan nila yung kahalagahan." - she adds.

She visited Plan-covered communities and is set to join activities in Masbate, Occidental Mindoro, Eastern Samar, Western Samar, Northern Samar, South Leyte and the Camotes Islands.

"We go around, we've been to Masbate, Camotes Island and Tacloban at iikutin pa namin ang bahagi ng Samar para makita ang kalagayan ng mga kababayan natin doon".

More of talking to the parents of the children and kung ano yung estado nila sa buhay pagdating sa kalusugan at kung aware ba sila sa mga karapatan nila.

The first leg of Tunog Natin! Concert Series

Among the OPM artists that we usually see, I like watching live performances of Sitti, Princess, Nina and other bands. During the first leg of Tunog Natin! Concert Series, a free concert featuring some of the most distinguished and promising names in the local music scene were on stage at the Ayala Triangle gardens to lobby for public support for the slowly fading Original Pilipino Music.(OPM)

It was the first time that I was able to watch Princess performed live and despite of her being the last performer we stayed that long only to watch her sing. The wait was worthy, she had an awesome performance. I hope that she would still be lined up for the second leg and also hoping to see Nina perform live as well.

I was able to get a few words from the artists who were part of this prestigious event. Kudos to Avida Land Corp. who made this event possible.

2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games

This sunday at 3 am, 30 athletes and 12 coaches together with two officials are leaving for Athens, Greece. And will arrive on Athens on June 19 to join 7,000 athletes around the world from 170 countries worldwide for the 13th World Summer Games.

Before the athletes were sent to Athens, Greece we were able to interview Special Olympics Philippines National Executive Director Alex P. Babst and here are some of the things he shared about our participation to the 13th World Summer Games.

Our athletes are representing our country so our society really needs to support them. Find out what is intellectually challenge Filipinos can achieve.

Our society should not focus on the disability but rather praise and encourage the ability, that's why we are sending a Philippine team to compete with 7,000 athletes for the 13th World Summer Games.

Special Olympics Philippines

Next year in Korea, we will be holding Special Olympics. Summer games is held every 4 years just like the regular Olympics and Special Olympics comes a year before the regular Olympics, the next World Olympics will be held in 2015 in South Africa.

All countries in the Asia Pacific will be participating in the World Summer Games. Because ideally Asia is identical to China but the Asia Pacific region does not include China so they are very very particular in stating that we , the Philippines are part of the Asia Pacific region.

When we go to international competitions they would always say "Asia Pacific? Panalo na naman yan". China will dominate us again with their 500 athletes.

We are very sensitive to that because our filipino intellectually disabled athletes can shine on their own without the help of other countries.

As far as World games is concern, the Philippines will participate in 7 sports events, these are badminton, aquatics, athletics , bolce, gymnastics, bowling and powerlifting, we are sending a total of 30 athletes accompanied with 12 coaches.

Special Olympics is really a campaign for intellectually disabled. It is a worldwide non-government organization that consists of 3.5 million athletes and 100,000 volunteer coaches operating in 170 countries divided into 7 regions.

Special Olympics Philippines , founded 1978 presently has 12, 500 intellectually challenged athletes and 4,000 volunteer coaches registered in 13 regions throughout the country. Special Olympics Philippines trains and holds competitions in 10 sports events and organizes events for intellectually challenged Filipinos in the following programs:

Young Athletes Program
Unified Sports
Global Young Athletes Program
Family Support Program

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo gave us a grant of 3.5 million

During the 2009 national games in Lingayen, Pangasinan, it was thru the Office of the Presidential Management Staff they gave us a grant of 3.5 million, never in the history did any of our president give us a grant like that for our national games, we really had to scrounge.

During national games we usually had 600-800 athletes nationwide participating. Now we have to pay for their food, hotel and the sports venue and this lasts for three days but when we brought it up to President Gloria she was very kind and understood and she gave 3 and a half million and before the end of her term we mentioned to her about the World Summer Games and she instructed me to go to Pagcor and ask for assistance and to my surprise Pagcor helped us with a 5 million grant and that help includes budget for this year also, that was granted in 2010. This was used for the training and transport .

We are also planning to ask help from President Noynoy Aquino after the World Summer Games bringing the honor and medals to him.

World Vision: “Count Me In”

In order to give less fortunate kids proper education and nutrition, World Vision launched the campaign "Count me in 2011" to get more supporters and groups to sponsor children and be counted among the more than 22,000 existing Pinoy sponsors who are changing lives today. This project aims to send 11,000 kids back to school.

For only 20 pesos/day or 600/month you can help a kid and give him a brighter future. It's like sacrificing not to watch a movie or buy a cup of coffee in exchange for a greater cause. NGC shows food lovers how to be street-smart

Most Filipinos often regard themselves as street-smart because they already know something about everything or they are not easily fooled into believing what they don’t know. Or they have the skills needed to survive in difficult situations. But are Filipinos really street-smart?

In National Geographic Channel’s (NGC) first-ever locally produced mini-series Street Smart, NGC asks questions about occurrences in the everyday life of Filipinos and answers them through “street” experts – scientists and people who are immersed in the particular question every day – to uncover amazing yet little known facts about everyday things.

“We are excited to present Street Smart because this is the first culture and science TV series of its kind in the country. Our viewers definitely can improve on their street smartness by watching the series,” said Jude Turcuato, Fox International Channels territory director.

(A lot of people these days don't know how HIV is contacted.) And one the best part of this play is the beginning - everytime the cast would start falling in line and start singing "Seasons of Love". Since then I keeping on watching the play and singing the very beautiful song.

Cyclists Rally for Cervical Cancer Prevention on May 28

For the dedicated cyclists of the upcoming “Tour of Hope 2011- 00: Going the Xtra Mile Against Cervical Cancer,” it will take 500 kilometers in 5 days. They will undertake the challenging 5-day journey from Manila to Laoag in order to help raise funds for cervical cancer prevention vaccination drives and seminars.

“What makes this year’s Tour of Hope different is that we are going to vaccinate a total of 500 women during the tour,” explains Abbygale Arenas-de Leon, Bravehearts president. “We wanted the tour to be more than just a way to spread awareness about cervical cancer prevention. We hope this will inspire more women to take action against this deadly but preventable disease.”

Recently, the exciting details of the biggest anti-cervical cancer were revealed at the official launch of this year’s Tour of Hope, which was organized by Bravehearts in partnership with Team David’s Salon and GlaxoSmithKline. The event was held at R.O.X., the biggest outdoor sports and recreation hub in Southeast Asia and hosted by celebrity athlete Tricia Chiongbian-Concepcion, who will also be cycling to help save women from cervical cancer in the Tour of Hope.

In a country where cervical cancer claims the lives of 12 women everyday[1], the need to fight this disease has only become more urgent over the years.

“I would like to encourage women to be screened for cervical cancer regularly,” said Dr. Cecilia Llave, Program Director of the Cervical Cancer Prevention Network (CECAP). “The disease is treatable through early detection. In fact, not only is it treatable, it can also be avoided by living a healthy lifestyle and getting vaccinated.”

Since The Tour of Hope started in 2008, it has generated approximately Php 2 million through sponsorships and pledges. These were then used for cervical cancer screening programs and lectures with the Cervical Cancer Prevention Network (CECAP).

However, if you think that The Tour of Hope is all about the bikers, think again. Over the past two years, the event organizers have formed partnerships with local government units such as those of Tarlac, Dagupan, Pampanga, La Union, and Baguio in order to conduct lectures during each stopover of the tour to local communities with marginalized groups who display poor health-seeking behavior.

What’s in Store for The Tour of Hope 2011

Aside from the challenging journey, The Tour of Hope has always been known for bringing its participants to scenic locations such as Vigan, Zambales, and Camarines Sur. This year is no exception. The Tour of Hope 2011 - 500: Going the Xtra Mile Against Cervical Cancer will kick off at the TriNoma Mall in Quezon City on May 28, 2011.

The first stop will be at Tarlac City, Tarlac. It is the home of President Noynoy Aquino’s ancestral house and Mount Pinatubo, where adventure-seeking 4x4 wheel drivers try their skills, and hikers visit the crater. The tour will then continue to San Fernando, La Union, where the renowned La Union Botanical Gardens is located. Afterwards, the bikers will head to Vigan City, Ilocos Sur, where historical churches and ancestral homes that reflect the beauty of old world architecture can be found. The fourth stop will be Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, where tourists often visit the Juan Luna Shrine. There, visitors can get a glimpse of the award-winning Spolarium painter’s life through vintage photographs and household artifacts. The final stop for this year’s Tour of Hope is Paoay, where bikers will get to see the unique blend of Spanish, Chinese, and architecture represented by Paoay Church, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The last leg of the tour will feature celebrity bikers such as Commissioner Gregorio Larrazabal, Marvin Kiefer, Rovilson Fernandez, Troy Montero, Aubrey Miles, Will Devaughn, Richie Hardin, Richard Herrera, Janna Victoria, Gem Padilla, Anthony Pangilinan, and David Charlton. They will be lending their star power to draw attention to a good cause. In addition, Tessa Prieto-Valdes is currently working on a special project that will also help raise funds for cervical cancer prevention.

As part of the preparations for the upcoming Tour of Hope, there will also be a Mini Tour of Hope that will be held on May 7 at Filinvest, Alabang. This is a great way for biking enthusiasts to show their support for the anti-cervical cancer advocacy, and everyone is invited to join.

This year's theme for the 13th Tour of the Fireflies is Bike Revolution 2011. Promoting Bicycle as a sustainable form of transportation.

I woke up late so I was not able to go to Tiendesitas for the assembly so I went to CCP instead for the halfstop. There was a program going on for the Earth Day celebration and part of it is the arrival of The Firefly Brigade. Here are some of the photos during the 13th Tour of the Fireflies.

Carlos Celdran said he also went to CCP to join the brigade going back to Tiendesitas. He was planning to wear his Damaso costume but he said it's heavy. He didn't bring his Samsung Galaxy Tab because it's also heavy. He just wanted to bike for clean air.

A few days ago I met some of Ms. Earth Philippines candidates, and as promised they joined the tour as their way of saving Mother Earth. Good job ladies!

"Saving education by building classrooms" continues to touch the lives of many, the number of schools requesting to benefit from KSD is increasingly growing as well. The program on Health, called Batang Lusog (Healthy Child) addresses rights violations in health, water and environmental sanitation.

Cosim has been invited to be Plan's Program ambassador because of her advocacies on health and child protection.

“We have seen Cheryl’s passion to help the marginalized population and her involvement in our ealth and child protection programs will surely bring a louder voice into the advocacy for children’s health, nutrition and protection against abuse, exploitation, violence and harm,” said Michael Diamond, Plan’s country director.

As program ambassador, Plan said, Cosim will “speak for and in behalf of Plan for programs relating to health and child protection.”

She will be visiting Plan-covered communities and is set to join activities in Masbate, Occidental Mindoro, Eastern Samar, Western Samar, Northern Samar, South Leyte and the Camotes Islands.

“I will try my best to do my part to make sure that our children will get the best kind of future that they deserve,” Cosim said.

Plan is one of the oldest and largest children’s development organizations in the world operating in 66 countries. It has been in the Philippines since 1961.

Cosim is a multi-awarded broadcast journalist who currently hosts Alagang Kapatid on TV5. She also co-anchors the network's flagship news program, Aksyon, with Erwin Tulfo.

As part of promoting the bicycle for clean air and sustainable communities, Firefly brigade is now all set for the 13th Tour of the Fireflies with this years theme: "Bike Revolution 2011".

During the press con the brigade spearheaded by their president Ricky Pineda, were happy to announce that this activity encourages more and more people to use bike for clean air.

The 13th Tour of the Fireflies: Bike Revolution happens on 17 April, 2011, Sunday at Tiendesitas. An expected 8,000 to 10,000 bikers would participate in the event, which covers a 42 kilometer distance, from Pasig, San Juan, Mandaluyong, Quezon City, and Pasay.

So that's basically 10,000 less car and that's great help for reducing pollution.

One of the most interesting participants of this activity are the lovely candidates of Miss Earth Philippines 2011 aside from being the regular bikers , it's also their part in saving Mother Earth.

Who is Janice Hung?

A beauty to behold, Janice looks fragile like a porcelain doll, beautiful and statuesque. But beware, she can easily throw you a punch that could send you flying!

Janice Hung, at a very tender age of 7, decided to be different. Where kids her age would rather play Janice dedicated many years of her life in Wushu. She has painstakingly mastered the art even if there were people in her life that were against her newly found passion.

Of course, not everything was about Wushu, Janice had to balance her time between studies and her training. Talking to Janice, you would hear a very intelligent person, an achiever who knows what she wants and get it too! A college beauty queen, she excelled in academics and in various extra-curricular activities such as basketball, volleyball and track and field. Because of her athletic excellence, she was given full academic scholarship at The University of Santo Tomas.

Spending 30 hours every week at the gym, intensely practicing the elegant and powerful techniques of Wushu, specifically Taiji, Janice’s hardships paid off. At the age of 16, she was chosen to take part in the Philippine Wushu Team. From 1999 until 2007, she participated in different kinds of events such as Chang Quan, Swordplay, Spearplay, Tai Ji Quan and Taiji sword and consistently won the gold medals in the National Wushu Championships. She also won a Gold medal for freestyle Tai Ji Quan - 1st Invitational Wushu competition which was held in Huangshan, China in 2007. Janice also represented the Philippines in the 21st SEA GAMES in Malaysia in 2001, the 14th Asian Games in Busan, Korea in 2002 and other international competitions where she consistently won medals for the country.

For the Janice Hung fans, seeing her every move, every sway of the sword (which bring us fans into the edge of our seats with awe and amazement), this is the thrill we so closely enjoy watching Janice Hung, an indomitable spirit, the consummate athlete ….. and yes, we can’t help but also admire the beauty that is Janice.

She was born in a middle-class Chinese family in the early 80’s in downtown Manila. Even when she was just a kid Janice was never a typical girl. She’s a girl that knows what she wants and she makes things happen.

Because of the discipline Janice acquired from her years of martial arts training, she has excelled in all endeavours she has put her hands in. She became the driving force between two books on Wu Shu, named Tai Ji Quan and Tai Ji Jian. The books were authored by her coach and master, Dr. Yu from Beijing Sports University. Janice promotes these books with the main objective of bringing the benefits of great discipline and culture derived from ancient Chinese wisdom to and for the average Filipino.

A successful advertising model, she has endorsed several international and local brands like Chevron, Accel, Cream Silk Shampoo, Mc Donald’s , and Nescafe. She also handled the Kung Fu Panda Campaign.

Recently, Janice went into acting landing a role in the TV series called Rounin. This was followed by Kung Fu Kids and Kung Tayo’y Magkakalayo.Proactively Committed, Creatively Responsive

This is the batch where I started to become a fan of RENT the musical

This is 9 works theatrical's version directed by Robbie Guevara. And after I saw the cast in their first run in RCBC last February, I started researching RENT online and that time also I began to watch different versions of RENT again and again.

I watched RENT a lot of times already but then I enjoyed watching it and I am very happy to watch it again last tuesday at Rockwell Powerplant Mall. The cast that made me appreciate the story of RENT. There are posts that this batch was not the best version but I don't mind, as long as I learned RENT because of this batch I am thankful enough, I will continue to watch RENT because I am really inspired by it's story , the story that never ends.
