Recently talked about director, Brillante Mendoza celebrates his birthday and he has surely accomplished a lot through his years.

From his Cannes debuts to his numerous awards from prestigious film festivals, and even directing President Rodrigo Duterte's first State of the Nation Address, this man is unstoppable.

Born on July 30, 1960, in San Fernando, Pampanga, Philippines. He graduated from the University of Santo Thomas, taking up Advertising at the College of Architecture and Fine Arts.

He first started as a production designer in television, theatre and feature films. He was one of the most sought after production designers, from feature films he transitioned to television commercial productions.

From 1990 to 2004 he focused on being an Art Director for national and multi-national advertisers: San Miguel Brewery, Asia Brewery, PLDT, Globe Telecom, Smart Telecommunications, Procter & Gamble Philippines and Unilever Philippines.

Mendoza ventured into feature films as a director in 2005, not as a production designer, his first was "Masahista (The Masseur) that won the Golden Leopard Award in Switzerland at the Locarno International film festival.

The film won other awards such as the Interfaith award in 2006 in the Brisbane film festival and the Audience award in the Turin International film festival. And this has started his journey as a film director.

His film "Kinatay" that he entered at the 2009 Cannes film festival bagged him the Best Director Award, the  first filipino to ever win it. Dubbed by the world's critics as an ultra neo-realist for his films.

His films focuses on social realities of the lives of ordinary people in extraordinary situations in the country.
