ZAMBALES - The 2nd Karayan Surfing Competition took place on September 27-30 in Barangay Pundaquit San Antonio, Zambales, paving the way to discover Filipino skimboarders that may soon compete internationally.
Mostly composed of surfers from Zambales, La Union and Manila, the three-day competition was judged base on speed, flow and maneuver.
From the categories of local shortboard, longboard men’s open, longboard beginners (mixed), groms division (13 years old below) and wahine open division, all competitors were scored on a point system basis -- 10 being the highest and 1 being the lowest.
The Karayan tournament is a fundraising initiative for local surfers who wish to compete in national competitions and promote Pundaquit as one of the country’s top surfing destinations.
Tagadagat (a group of local surfers in Pundaquit), with the help of Tourism office of Zambales, organized the tournament. Solar News was the event’s media partner.
The winners received cash prize, trophies and sponsored gift packs. They will also get to represent Pundaquit in the upcoming National Surfing Competition.
