United Pulp and Paper Co., Inc. (UPPC) in SCG Paper, the leading manufacturer of high-quality and cost-efficient industrial-grade paper in the country, recently held their first ever Barangay Green Cleaning Day in the town of Calumpit, Bulacan – the first of many barangay clean-ups to be initiated by UPPC in SCG Paper in their own community of Bulacan, as part of their ‘Green World’ advocacy.
The day’s highlight was UPPC in SCG Paper’s donation of an irrigation strainer to Barangay Bugion in the town of Calumpit which will help prevent solid waste build-up in the community’s irrigation canal. The donated irrigation strainer will impact at least five communities in the town.
Present during the turnover of the irrigation strainer to the municipality of Calumpit, Bulacan were UPPC in SCG Paper’s VP for Manufacturing and Plant Manager Saharath Pattanavibool, Calumpit Vice-Mayor Zacarias Candelaria and former Calumpit Councilor and advisor to the mayor Cornelio Balingit. With over 200 volunteers in attendance, UPPC in SCG Paper employees joined barangay and municipality volunteers and worked hand in hand to clean Barangays Bugion and Palimbang.
“We as an organization believe that to achieve our vision of a “Green World” we should start in our very own community. Donating this irrigation strainer to Barangay Bugion is one small step towards improving the quality of living of the barangay residents. We hope it will be a catalyst for a greener, cleaner and healthier Calumpit,” explained Mr. Pattanavibool at the turnover ceremony.
To help Calumpit journey on to a greener environment, UPPC in SCG Paper drafted a list of follow-up activities which will help its residents continue UPPC in SCG Paper’s advocacy.
“We hope that the residents of Calumpit will be proactive in preserving their community and participate in follow-up activities such as Solid Waste Management Training and 5S Training. With the help of these training programs, we will increase the community’s awareness and level of responsibility for caring for their environment and protecting the health of their loved ones.”
The company is currently looking into donating more irrigation strainers to other barangays of Bulacan.
Leading the advocacy for greener packaging operations
UPPC in SCG Paper, the Philippines’ leading manufacturer of high quality and cost efficient industrial grade paper, has been leading the green revolution in the packaging business since its introduction to the Philippine market. More than an industry leader, UPPC in SCG Paper is also responsible in reaching out to its customers and end-users in implementing after sales service programs such as knowledge sharing on environmental preservation and also manufacturing improvements and cost efficiency. Just this year, UPPC in SCG Paper organized a forum to inspire colleagues in the packaging industry and their business partners to make the important move toward greener operations and sustainable packaging – this is to jumpstart an advocacy within the industry that they intend to pursue.
To date, UPPC in SCG Paper has one of the most environmentally-sound paper manufacturing operations in the Philippines as it produces 100% recycled paper. Its Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) Boiler and Effluent Treatment Plant are among the most advanced in the Philippines which have earned various awards given by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DENR), Zero Basura Olympics (ZBO) and Environmental Management Bureau (EMB). UPPC in SCG Paper is also the recipient of the Green Choice Seal of Approval for their environmentally-sound manufacturing process and products.
