The Center for Art, New Ventures and Sustainable Development (CANVAS), in cooperation with the Vargas Museum, and with support from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), launches two major exhibitions that serve as artistic contributions to the goal of promoting free and meaningful elections in the Philippines in May 2010.

In Everyday Filipino Heroes, emerging and senior artists participate with works that send a collective message about the role of the electorate in free elections, one that is critical and discerning, and therefore heroic, never needing to be taken by saviors and messiahs of change.


Images of their original works will also be used for outdoor banners that will line the University’s renowned acacia-sheltered Academic Oval, and create a parallel public art exhibit that engages in a relaxed and non-intimidating environment. At the end of the exhibition, the banners will be recycled and transformed into one-of-a-kind tote bags, the proceeds from which will be donated to support selected charities, as well as other CANVAS initiatives to promote greater awareness and appreciation for Philippine art, culture and the environment.

Everyday Filipino Heroes will open simultaneously with Dekalogo, where ten Salingpusa artists including Elmer Borlogan, Manny Garibay, Anthony Palomo, Karen Flores, Jose Santos III, Cris Villanueva, Jim Orencio, Tammy Tan, Neil Manalo, and Ferdie Montemayor reflect on Apolinario Mabini’s The True Decalogue. Written to accompany Mabini’s draft of a constitution for the new Philippine Republic, The True Decalogue outlined his “ten commandments” for Filipinos, and was framed to meet the needs of Filipino patriotism for all time. Indeed, the words resonate and remain relevant even today.

Each artist was assigned one commandment to interpret a thought-provoking 5 feet by 4 feet artwork. CANVAS will then design ten posters incorporating Mabini’s words and the artists’ images, and capped with a message for Filipinos to “Vote Wisely”. These posters will be made available as high-resolution files, and downloadable for free on the Internet, so that it can be printed, or handed out as flyers for even more people to see and consider, or simply collect.

Everyday Filipino Heroes and Dekalogo exhibitions will run until 31 May 2010.
